Online mastering

A simple mastering chain for a finished mix: tone shaping, gentle compression, a loudness target and a limiter that stops peaks at your ceiling.

How to use it

  1. Choose your finished mix (WAV gives the best result).
  2. Pick a preset. Streaming (−14) is a common target for online platforms.
  3. Adjust bass and treble by ear and compare with the original.
  4. Download the result.

Questions

Is this the same as a mastering engineer?

No. It is a quick, automatic chain that raises loudness and tames peaks. A trained engineer can do much more, but this is useful for demos, ideas and simple releases.

What is LUFS?

A way to measure perceived loudness. Streaming services normalise tracks to a target, often around −14 LUFS, so very loud masters are turned down anyway.

Why is the result sometimes quieter than my target?

When the peak ceiling is reached before the target loudness, the track is held at the ceiling. Lower the target or reduce compression.
